Mary Bywater Cross

Mary Bywater Cross
Mary Bywater Cross will be our Featured Speaker at this year's quilt show. Her topic is "Grandmother's Garden: Reflections on a 1930's Oregonian Quilt Contest".

The slide lecture is scheduled for 1:00 on Saturday afternoon.

This slide lecture features an important source of patterns for quilt makers in the first half of the 20th century - the newspaper column. Mary Bywater Cross will present the discoveries of the quilts and their makers in this one-hour lecture on the local contest. The Oregonian newspaper contest of 1930 featured the Grandmother's Garden pattern from Nancy Page Quilt Club. This paper/lecture is the result of a documentation project done by the Columbia-Willamette Quilt Study Group in 1985. Begun initially by a survey made by Helen Grigg in about 1975, the study group updated the files and documented the quilts.

Quilts from the project will be featured in the quilt show. Plus, members of the audience are invited to bring other newspaper pattern quilts to share. Be sure to bring whatever history may be known.

In a previous Milwaukie Center quilt show, one of these quilts was shown. It would be a delight for Mary Bywater Cross if it would surface again !!
